Our Centre

Our Club History

The Aspley Little Athletics Centre was officially opened by the Right Honourable Lord Mayor, Councillor Frank Sleeman on 24th January 1981. Bowden Park, Geebung became our permanent home on 3rd November 1984.

Paul O'Brien OAM (1936 - 2013)

Paul O’Brien, a former Chief Legal Officer of the Brisbane City Council, was instrumental in the development and success of Aspley Little Athletics and the introduction of Aspley Athletics. In 2002, he was awarded Little Athletics Queensland Life Membership in recognition for his outstanding contribution and meritorious service to Little Athletics.

Paul’s other awards included life membership to Queensland Athletics in 2004, a Premier of Queensland Sports Federation Service to Sport Award in 2000 and a National Sports Medal from the Federal Government in 2001. Paul O’Brien Oval was named in his honour in 1999 by former Brisbane Lord Mayor, Jim Soorley.

His legacy was continued after his passing in 2013 by his wife, Rosslyn O’Brien who remained active within the Centre until she passed in 2022.

Aspley Little Athletics is eternally grateful and forever indebted to Paul and Rosslyn’s tireless efforts, dedication and commitment for over thirty years to Little Athletics.

About Aspley Athletics Club

Aspley Athletics Club was formed by Aspley Little Athletics Centre (ALAC) in 2001 and was incorporated on 7th August 2002.  The club is affiliated with Queensland Athletics (QA), and was formed to offer athletes a natural progression pathway from junior to senior athletics and to retain participants within the sport. Aspley Athletics offers athletes a structured training approach and competition within the same caring and supportive atmosphere as that of ALAC.

Greg Heskett and Isabelle Ceasar coach our QA athletes on Monday and Wednesday afternoons during the Winter season, as well as our registered ALAC athletes, who are 10 years old and above, at Bowden Park. This coaching will be focused on sprints, middle distance and jumps. Rebecca (Bec) Lacey coaches on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons focusing on Sprints, Hurdles and Horizontal Jumps.

Aspley Athletics and ALAC will actively encourage Little Athletes to join Aspley Athletics and compete in QA events. Our goal is to boost the membership of Aspley Athletics and enter as many individuals and teams as possible in QA competitions including state relays and championship events.
